Universal mobile telephony system (UMTS) refers to the next generation of cellular technology that is also being standardized by European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI).

Wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) is the air interface technology selected by ETSI and the major European and Japanese mobile communications operators. This technology is optimized to allow very high-speed multimedia services such as full-motion video, Internet access, and videoconferencing.

Spectrum for UMTS WRC’92 identified the frequency bands 1885-2025 MHz and 2110-2200 MHz for future IMT-2000 systems, with the bands 1980-2010 MHz and 2170-2200 MHz intended for the satellite part of these future systems.

Circuit and Packet Domains Two types of networks approaches are specified for UMTS - the R99 core network solution: circuit and packet domains.  Iu-cs is an UMTS interface for the circuit domain, equivalent to the GSM "A" interface, Iu-ps is an UMTS interface for packet domain, equivalent to the "Gb" interface in GPRS.

EDGE is referred to as 136HS in the UWC standard. It has both a wide area and an indoor component to provide data rates of 384 kbps and 2 Mbps respectively.

3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)

IMT-2000 is the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) framework for third-generation standards. Technical specifications for IMT-2000 members are being developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a global co-operation between six Organisational Partners (ARIB, CWTS, ETSI, T1, TTA, and TTC).

Organisational Partners

Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB), Japan.
China Wireless Telecommunication Standard (CWTS)
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)
Committee T1, USA

Where Does WAP fit in?

WAP brings Internet content and advanced services to digital cellular phones and other wireless terminals. WAP is a global wireless protocol specification that works across the following wireless network technology types: GSM (900, 1800 & 1900MHz), PDC, CDMA (IS-95 and/or IS-707), US-TDMA (IS-136), iDEN (ESMR), DataTAC, Mobitex, CDPD, DECT, PHS, FLEX, and ReFLEX. Applications using WAP are scaleable across a variety of transport options and device types. A common standard offers potential economies of scale, encouraging cellular phone and other device manufacturers to invest in developing compatible products. With WAP, cellular and other wireless network carriers and content providers are able to develop new differentiated service offerings as a way to attract new subscribers, while consumers benefit from more and varied choices in mobile communications applications, advanced services and Internet access.
