An apparatus comprises at least one RFID chip (30), which is surrounded by a metallic outer casing (11) of a packaging unit (1), is used for radio-frequency identification and has a circuit (32) and an antenna structure (31), and a transmitting/receiving unit (41) for transmitting a transmission signal (42) and/or...

FreshPatents.com Poker chips and methods of reading the same
A method for reading poker chips according to one embodiment includes sending out an interrogation signal; receiving responses from poker chips in response to the interrogation signal, each of the poker chips comprising a circuit and an antenna coupled to the circuit, wherein the antenna minimally affects electromagnetic RF fields...

BBC Chip sales boost Samsung profits
Samsung Electronics reports record quarterly profits thanks to higher sales of smartphones and components such as memory chips.

InfoWorld From the labs: IT's future today
For all its promise of revolution, the computing industry often lags behind expectations. After all, your netbook is really just a laptop, only smaller and cheaper. The chip that powers your PC today has a direct lineage back to the Pentiums of yesterday. Your latest hard drive might hold 2TB, but it's still just a hard drive. Where's the real innovation? In the labs, of course.

BWE Magazine UltraWideband Rollout Continues Pace by Electing CSR to WiMedia Alliance Board
CSR (LSE: CSR) announced that Kristine Overlaur has been appointed to the board responsible for bringing UWB (Ultra Wideband) Bluetooth to the mass market, the WiMedia Alliance. The appointment underlines CSR's UWB technology for worldwide use in mobile phones and other battery powered portable devices, with single chip silicon available in H208 with volume ramping in 2009.

BWE Magazine Ultrawideband Broadband Wireless Chipset Manufacturer Secures $24 Million in Funding
Wisair, a leading provider of single-chip based Ultra Wideband (UWB) and Wireless USB (WUSB) solutions, announced that it has secured $24 million in its latest round of funding. The financing included four new international investors and was led by Susquehanna Growth Equity (SGE), a US-based private equity fund investing in growth capital and late stage venture opportunities. SGE was joined by European-based Advent Venture Partners, Bridge Capital Fund of Japan (an affiliate of Nikko Antfactory), and Yasud...

BWE Magazine WiMedia Certifies First PHYs for High Band Operation, Paving the Way for Global UWB Adoption
The WiMedia Alliance announced the certification of the first three Ultra Wideband (UWB) physical layer chipsets (PHYs) to support the WiMedia Spectrum Extension Release (SER) announced in August. The chips from Alereon, Realtek and Staccato Communications support operation in Band Groups 1 and 3 (3.1 to 4.8GHz and 6.3 to 7.9GHz, respectively). The Alereon and Staccato chips also support operation in Band Group 6 (7.4 to 9.0GHz).

WSN Evolution: Ubiquitous Sensor Network

This report continues Practel projects that analyze Wireless Sensors Networks (WSNs) marketing and technological characteristics. It also shows that the WSN evolution path leads to Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN); such a network will, eventually, create connectivity with millions of smart sensors that can provide detailed information to users regarding various events and their parameters anywhere in the Earth. Major USN features, standards and applications are also analyzed.

Particular, the report emphasizes:

1. Technology allows now to build multi-purpose miniaturized smart sensors with various types of radios. Smart sensors have enough computing power to process row data; and they consume very little energy. The report concentrates on the standardization work, technological advances and WSN marketing characteristics. A detailed survey of the industry is also included.

2. This report also addresses the Ubiquitous Sensor Network technologies and markets. As it is envisioned at the present time, USN services will be supported by multiple technologies, including:
  • Wireless and wired smart sensors
  • Further miniaturization and smart packaging of ICs
  • Self-organization and self-healing network topologies
  • Utilization of nodes with ultra-low power consumption
  • Utilization of wireless technologies with power scavenging for maintenance-free services.
The report concentrates on the analysis of these USN components as well as on USN applications. It also addresses WSN-IP and the progress in bringing such small devices as sensors into the IP world.

3. The report addresses WSN/USN implementation issues; it shows that such huge an infrastructure as USN cannot be effectively maintained without developing self-powered nodes. The power scavenging industry features are analyzed; and results of vendors’ survey are included.
