Bluetooth Use on Airplanes

Original Post: Bluetooth on Airplanes  (eGroups Msg.)    Date: 2000-07-27

AirCell, Inc. and Motorola, Inc. have announced that they successfully completed the world's first in-flight test of  Bluetooth wireless technology.

This test represents the first application of Bluetooth technology in the aviation industry . Currently, the Federal Communications Commission prohibits the use of personal cellular phones while airborne due to the potential interference with the terrestrial wireless network. Recently , AirCell has developed an FCC-approved, in-flight cellular link that prevents interference with conventional ground-based cell sites. Presently, voice and data calls are placed with a hard-wired handset rather than the user's personal communication device.

By combining the AirCell air-ground link with the Bluetooth technology, pilots and passengers will be able to use their wireless phones, laptops and other portable communication devices on the ground or in the air, without interference with other networks.
