Bluetooth Information
Rainbow Single-Chip Bluetooth Radio Transceiver
STMicroelectronics’ STw5288 integrates in a single silicon-germanium
BiCMOS chip a complete front end radio receiver for class 2 and class 3
short range applications such as cellphones. With the addition of the
STB7710 power amplifier it can also meet the requirements of longer range
Class 1 applications such as cordless phones and home networking.
Thanks to the spectral purity of the STw5288’s transmitter the device
is suited to Class 1 applications where an external power amplifier extends
the range beyond 10m. STMicroelectronics
STB7710 power amplifier chip is based on the same technology and
integrates the input and interstage matching for easier interfacing.
The digital interface of the STw5288 supports both BlueRF
monodirectional and bidirectional modes. This is software configurable. The
monodirectional mode I/O pins, are JTAG compatible, allowing boundary scan
and testability at board level, and the direct pad access requires less
MIPS in the associated baseband. The bidirectional mode uses only eight I/O
pins.

BlueVelvet
Single-Chip Bluetooth IC
Designed using ST’s advanced RFCMOS technology, the STw2400 integrates
on a single chip a complete RF transceiver, Bluetooth digital core and an
ARM7 microcontroller. This outstanding level of integration allows
Bluetooth wireless connectivity to be implemented with a minimum of
external components.
The advanced radio in the STw2400 supports three and five-slot high bit
rate data modes, in addition to voice mode. Moreover it supports directly
Bluetooth Class 2 operation and with an external technology power amplifier
chip -- the
STB7710 -- it can also implement longer range Class 1 applications.
Produced in silicon-germanium BiCMOS technology, the STB7710 integrates
input and interstage matching for easier interfacing.
The Bluetooth protocol stack runs on the embedded ARM7 microcontroller in
the STw2400 and can be stored either in external memory and loaded when the
chip is powered or be embedded in an on-chip memory for cost optimized
applications. Thanks to its flexible memory management the STw2400 is
suitable for a wide variety of Bluetooth applications in embedded or add-on
modules and with HCI or embedded software architectures.
The digital part of the STw2400 is built around the Ericsson Bluetooth
Core (EBC) and the ARM7 microcontroller. The EBC implements all lower layer
functions of the Bluetooth protocol stack.
ST’s software is based on the Bluetooth protocol stack from Ericsson.
The full Bluetooth protocol stack is available in three architectures:
HCI/LM, remote embedded or fully embedded. The selection of architecture is
made based upon its merit for the application targeted. ST will propose a
solution to link the remote embedded to the customer host application. The
STW2400 is available in BGA144, in QFP208 for software development and
debug or in bumped dice to optimize the use of floor space in the
application.

BlueVelvet Developer's Kit
The BlueVelvet Developer's Kit (BVDK) kit is designed to be useful for a
broad range of users, both software developers and hardware developers.
Together with the ST Bluetooth product datasheets and user manuals it
provides an accelerated jumpstart to any Bluetooth product developer.
Flexible and comprehensive, the BVDK kit can be used for software
integration & development with different ST Bluetooth chips, including
standalone baseband processors with external RF functions and single-chip
solutions like BlueVelvet.

STB7710
Power Amplifier IC
The STB7710 is a monolithic two stage power amplifier designed for
Bluetooth Class 1 applications. It delivers 22dBm output power with an
efficiency of 40%. It includes a four level digital power control circuit.
To minimize system cost, the STB7710 includes all the input and interstage
matching network, as well as bias circuitry and ESD protection. To minimize
the overall size the STB7710 can be supplied as a bumped die.
