This IDC study analyzes the past developments and future outlook of public WiFi services in Western Europe. Driven by renewed interest from operators and the growing proliferation of smartphones, tablets, and other WiFi capable devices, public WiFi regained its place in the spotlights in the past year. It discusses changes in terms of business models and usage profiles. It covers both commercial and community hotspots. "Operators should not view the second coming of public WiFi as a replacement of fixed or mobile services, but rather embrace it as a complement of their offerings," said Jan Hein Bakkers, research manager at IDC.
