Welcome to our
section on WAP Push technology.
What is WAP Push?
A WAP Push is an SMS message which contains a link to a WAP page. When a
compatible handset receives a WAP Push message, it allows the user to access
that WAP content.

Overview WAP Push is
still the most common medium for the delivery of business to peer
multimedia rich services. A WAP Push is effectively a simple SMS within
the header of which is included a link to a WAP address. On receiving a
WAP Push, the compatible handset will automatically give the user the

Comparison
of WAP Push and Short Message Service (SMS) (PDF) This paper compares
WAP push technology with Short Messaging Service (SMS). Depending on your
perspective, these technologies have facets of both application
development and data transportation. Indeed, push technology (specifically
WAP push) may be considered a user of SMS as a transportation medium.

SMS
FAQ A push operation in WAP is accomplished by allowing a Push
Initiator (PI) to transmit push content and delivery instructions to a
Push Proxy Gateway (PPG), which then delivers the push content to the WAP
client according to the delivery instructions. The PPG is typically a WAP
Push Gateway with support for WAP Push. The PI is typically an application
that runs on an ordinary web server. It communicates with the PPG using
the Push Access Protocol (PAP). The PPG uses the Push Over-the-Air (OTA)
Protocol to deliver the push content to the client. |

WAP
Push SDK This is an open source SDK to create WAP Push in Java. It
implements the PAP 1.0 specification. A push operation in WAP is
accomplished by allowing a Push Initiator (PI) to transmit push content
and delivery instructions to a Push Proxy Gateway (PPG), which then
delivers the push content to the WAP client according to the delivery
instructions. The PPG is typically a WAP Gateway with support for WAP
Push. The PI is typically an application that runs on an ordinary web
server. It communicates with the PPG using the Push Access Protocol (PAP).
The PPG uses the Push Over-the-Air (OTA) Protocol to deliver the push
content to the client. The WAP standard defines three push content types,
which are supported by this SDK:
- Service Indication (SI) - send a notification to the WAP
client.
- Service Loading (SL) - cause the WAP client to load and execute a
service.
- Cache Operations (CO) - invalidate content objects in the WAP client
cache.

WAP Push Library / SDK Openwave WAP Push Library simplifies the
process of creating push-enabled applications, such as multi-user games
and messaging. Featuring Java APIs that support WAP 1.2.1 Push Access
Protocol, the library allows you to simultaneously deliver content and
alerts, giving you greater control of information delivery and other
capabilities, including session initiation, cache management, and
multi-recipient addressing. |
